Who is Greater Kingston Chorus?
The Greater Kingston Chorus is celebrating a big win following the annual Sweet Adelines International Lake Ontario Region 16 Choral Competition this past April 4-7 in St. Catharines, ON.
Co-directed by Sue Marriott and Andria Coward, GKC started their two-song musical package off with an uptune called “On a Wonderful Day Like Today,” and finished with “How Deep is the Ocean”, a beautiful ballad. Little did they know how true the lyrics of their up-tune would be as they sang the last lines of the song, “Today, on a day like today, what a glorious day… what a day!” Their set was met with thunderous applause and a standing ovation.
Marriott and Coward began their co-director roles in 2018, and this year marks their third time taking their chorus to the Regional competition. The two were labeled as a “dynamic duo” by the judges.
For the first time in 14 years, GKC was announced not only as the winner of the AA Division (for mid-sized choruses), but as the Overall Winner of the Regional competition with a score of 620 – 37 points higher than last year, when they placed third in their division and fourth overall.
Winning the 2024 Regional competition means the chorus is eligible to compete at the Sweet Adelines International competition in October of 2025 in Columbus, Ohio. Currently 43 members strong, GKC is always looking to build their membership, and will certainly plan to increase their numbers as they prepare to head to the International stage in 2025.
The Regional contest also included a quartet competition, in which GKC’s quartet “Walkin’ On Sunshine” represented them proudly. Made up of chorus members Nancy Watson, Andria Coward, Paula Allen and Michele Weaver, this quartet has been competing for over ten years, and this year placed fourth overall.
Greater Kingston Chorus (GKC) is a welcoming community of women who enjoy learning and creating great music together.
